Slippery Rock Creek

April 23rd-25th.

MU whitewater's spring trip. The creek is a simple class III with a few class IV rapids mixed in the end. A fairly solid roll would be beneficial and self rescue skills are a must, as with any trip. It's about a 5.5 hour drive (depending who is driving) out west near to slippery rock university. The group we paddle with is large 12-18 paddlers on a nice weekend (Mansfield and Toledo, OH paddlers). The main river is simple, easily comparable to the Lehigh on the big water release. The last "miracle" mile is non-stop action, super fun, class III(moderate)-IV(simple).

Post if interested, I will update regularly.

Leaving 9am Friday morning... plan to meet in the Kmart parking lot at 8:40-8:45, which gives us a moment to hit up Dunkin's before heading out. It's a 5+ hr drive, but a fun weekend ahead, so well worth it!

Return is planned for Sunday for an Allentown arrival in the later PM hours, likely after dark, unless we need to leave sooner in which case we can discuss it Friday morning regarding cars.

Food is already arranged by the Mansfield and Toledo paddling clubs unless there is something specific you want to have along food is already provided for us. I'll be bringing somethings to share as well, simply because I offered, not because I was asked.

The cost for the camping + the food for the weekend will be about $35/person.

Questions??? CALL ME Smile

Steph,

Call me when you are not sleeping or working (I know your schedule is whacky and don't want to wake you up during the day).

Emily and I will probably not caravan out to SR. Friday she is doing some things at the university. We'll need to catch up with you at the Campsite, so I need details on where that is and such.

I hope the forecast improves, or it's going to be damp and cool - not the greatest camping weather.

Steph,

Thanks for posting this trip. The people were fun, the creek enjoyable and Emily and I had a great time. Maybe more LVW people will jump on board next year.

A quick review of the Slippery Rock Creek for other LVW folks:

At lower levels (like this weekend) this is a great creek for the beginners making a transition to class III water. It's easy class III, with a few nice play-spots, and two rapids that will challenge these boaters.

I'm told by regular paddlers that at higher levels the creek is full on fun for experienced boaters. Looking at the rapids, boulder size, and narrow width, it looks like a foot more water (apparently common) would make this worth the trip for some of the more hard core thrill seekers in LVW.

SYOTR,

Chip

Chip,

Saturday night rains blessed us with 5 inches of water for the Sunday paddle. It was a bit beefier than earlier paddles that weekend.... since it is a rain-run creek we can take advantage of weather conditions anytime!!

Glad you and Em made it out... it's fun getting groups of different paddlers from different areas together for such fun and camaraderie!!
